The #1 Candle Mistake: Why You Need to Trim Your Wicks

One of the most frequent questions we get asked by beginner candle lovers is: "Do I really need to trim my wick before every burn?"

The short answer is: Yes, absolutely! Let’s break down why this simple 10-second step changes everything.

What Happens When You Don’t Trim Your Wick?

When a candle burns, the wick draws liquid wax upward to fuel the flame. According to safety guidelines from the National Candle Association, if the wick grows too long (typically over 6-7mm), it can no longer draw wax efficiently. Instead, it starts drawing too much fuel too quickly, leading to several common issues:

  • The Dreaded Mushrooming: A carbon buildup forms at the tip, looking like a little black mushroom. This causes the flame to sputter and dance wildly.

  • Soot and Smoke: An untrimmed wick creates an unstable flame that releases black soot. This soot can stain the glass of your jar, coat your walls, and ruin a clean burn.

  • A Dangerous Flare-Up: Excessively long wicks can create dangerously high, flickering flames that overheat the container.

How to Trim Like a Pro

Trimming your wick is easy and takes less than 10 seconds.

  1. Let it cool: Always wait until your candle has completely solidified and cooled down.

  2. Trim to 1/4 inch: Use a dedicated wick trimmer, a pair of sharp scissors, or a clean tissue to snap off the charred tip, leaving about 6mm of clean wick. You can use a dedicated wick trimmer, small scissors or another suitable tool.

  3. Clear the debris: Make sure any wick trimmings or stray debris are removed from the wax pool before relighting.

By making wick trimming a ritual before every burn, your candles will burn cleaner, brighter, and significantly longer. Want to learn more hands-on tricks? Keep an eye out for our upcoming candle-making workshop schedule to craft and care for your own candles like a professional!
