Life After the Flame: How to Safely Clean and Repurpose Your Candle Jars

Every candle enthusiast knows the bittersweet feeling of a favorite candle reaching its end. But just because the wick won't light anymore doesn't mean the jar's life is over.

At PØURPØUR, sustainability is at the core of what we do. Our candles are poured into high-quality, reusable glass vessels precisely so they can be given a second life. Instead of tossing your empty jars into the recycling bin, here is how you can easily clean them out and repurpose them into beautiful home decor.

The Golden Rule: Stop at 1,5 cm
Before we clean, remember safety first! You should never burn a candle until the glass is completely dry. Always stop burning when there is about 1-1.5 cm of wax left at the bottom to prevent the glass from overheating and cracking.

The Freezer Trick
Wax naturally shrinks when it gets cold.

1. Place your unlit, cooled candle jar in the freezer overnight.
2. The next morning, the wax will have shrunk and pulled away from the glass walls.
3. Take a butter knife or spoon, gently press into the edge of the wax, and it should pop right out in one piece (wick tab included!).
4. Wash the jar with warm, soapy water.

The Boiling Water Method
Soy wax has a low melting point, making this method incredibly easy.

1. Place your candle jar on a heat-safe surface.
2. Pour boiling water directly into the jar, leaving a little room at the top.
3. The hot water will melt the remaining wax, which will then float to the surface.
4. Let the water cool completely. The wax will harden into a solid disk at the top. Simply pop the disk out, pull out the metal wick tab at the bottom, and wash the jar with soap.

5 Ways to Repurpose Your Clean Jar
